The flawless, 76 carat Archduke Joseph diamond goes up for auction on November 13. The diamond has a noble lineage and is expected to sell for $15 million. It is hard to visualize how large a 76 carat diamond is. According to the head of Christie's auction house, its about the size of a quail's egg.
The colossal stone is named after its one-time owner, the Archduke Joseph of Austria. It was discovered in the Golconda mine in India, which also produced several other famous stones: the Koh-i-noor, in the Royal Collection in the Tower of London; the Regent, the finest diamond in the French crown jewels housed in the Louvre in Paris; and the Hope, at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D. C.
It was last sold at a Christie's auction in 1993 for $6.5 million. The stone's heritage and lineage will make the selling price high, but it would have to sell for three times its expected selling price to qualify as the most expensive diamond sold at an auction. That record is held by the Graff Pink which sold for $46 million in 2010!
